Positive Psychology

What is Positive Psychology?

Positive Psychology uses behavioural techniques to enhance your quality of life, rather than solely focussing on treating mental illness conditions. It complements traditional psychological practice, and uses the scientific method to determine the most effective means of improving your quality of life.

A way of using positive intervention as a clinical treatment is to use positive activity interventions. Positive activity interventions, or PAIs, are brief self-administered exercises that aim to promote your positive feelings, thoughts, and behaviours. Two widely used PAIs are “Three Good Things” and “Best Future Self.”

  • “Three Good Things” requires you to document each day for a week, three events that went well during the day, and the respective causes
  • “Best Future Self” requires you to think about your life in the future, and imagine that everything has gone as well as it possibly could. You have worked hard and succeeded at accomplishing all of your life goals. You are then asked to write down what you imagined

Through and beyond these exercises, Positive Psychology aims to provide you with a new awareness of, and approach to, life.

Who Can Benefit From Positive Psychology?

Positive Psychology techniques can be used by anyone. Whether or not you face mental health challenges, these skills can improve your quality of life. These techniques have also been used in business, educational, and rehabilitation settings.
