Perinatal and Postnatal Depression Support

Pregnancy and the first year after birth can be filled with joy, but also bring significant emotional, physical, and psychological challenges. For many new parents, these changes can lead to mental health struggles, including Perinatal Depression and Postnatal Depression. Around 1 in 7 new mothers and 1 in 10 new fathers in Australia experience perinatal or postnatal depression. Early recognition and support can make a meaningful difference to your wellbeing, relationships, and ability to navigate early parenthood.

Signs and symptoms

It’s normal to feel overwhelmed or emotional during pregnancy and after birth — but when difficult feelings persist, it may be a sign that extra support is needed. Common symptoms of perinatal and postnatal depression include:

  • Ongoing low mood, sadness, or tearfulness
  • Feelings of hopelessness or guilt
  • High levels of anxiety or panic
  • Difficulty bonding with your baby
  • Feeling disconnected from your partner, family, or friends
  • Low self-esteem or body image concerns
  • Trouble sleeping (unrelated to infant care)
  • Lack of energy or motivation
  • Feeling like you’re not coping with parenthood
  • Intrusive or distressing thoughts

Everyone’s experience is different. You may notice changes in how you feel, think, or function day to day. If you’re unsure, it’s okay to ask for help — you don’t need to wait until things feel unmanageable.

Causes or contributing factors

Perinatal and postnatal depression can stem from a mix of physical, emotional, and environmental factors, including:

  • Hormonal changes during and after pregnancy
  • Past experiences of anxiety, depression, or trauma
  • Sleep deprivation and exhaustion
  • Stressful or unexpected birth experiences
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Lack of social or emotional support
  • Changes in identity, roles, or responsibilities
  • Financial stress or housing insecurity

These factors don’t affect everyone in the same way — and experiencing depression is not a sign of weakness or failure. It simply means you may need support during this major life transition.

Why seeking support matters

Untreated perinatal depression can impact many aspects of your life, but with the right help, things can get better. Seeking support early leads to better outcomes for both parents and children.

You don’t have to go through this alone. Talking to a trained psychologist can help you process what you’re feeling, explore your needs, and rebuild confidence in your role as a parent.

To access Medicare psychology rebates, book an appointment with your GP and ask for a Mental Health Care Plan. Most referrals begin with 6 sessions, with the option to access 4 more after a review. Referrals can also be provided by a psychiatrist or paediatrician.
