Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

What is Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)?

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a psychological treatment that focuses on the learning and experiencing of mindfulness meditation techniques. The focus of MBCT is to prevent future relapses of depression by allowing you to be aware of your thoughts and body sensations, and changing your relationship with each of these. You will learn to use guided meditations and techniques to cultivate mindfulness in your daily life. MBCT emphasises learning how to pay attention or concentrate with purpose, in each moment and most importantly, without judgment.

Who Can Benefit From MBCT?

MBCT techniques have been demonstrated to be effective in managing several conditions, including:

  • depression
  • bipolar disorder (in combination with medication)
  • anxiety
  • sleep disorders
  • adjustment disorders
  • ADHD
  • cravings in smokers.

MBCT is particularly helpful for persons experiencing ongoing depression. Depression is a condition that often returns in peoples’ lives, especially at stressful or distressing times.
